I imagine those "puffed up" characters are worried that they're entering a situation they can't control or manipulate to come out on top of (and that the elephant in the room will be uncovered), classic manipulation techniques.
People also have a lot of (Hollywood) misconceptions about tarot, that it's tapping into something "bad"... certainly in today's environment there's no time allowed for introspection, that stepping off-grid for a moment is seen as wrong.

People understand that party readings are time-dependent. Its a skill well-worth learning to do quickie readings - 5 or 10 minutes max, as you learn to focus and articulate with brevity. Its a bit like speed chess.
